President Barack Obama welcomed the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers to the White House Monday. Obama stated that there wasn’t a team who exemplified excellence on the court more than the Lakers did last year with winning their 15th league championship.
He was particularly excited to meet Coach Phil Jackson, the “Zen Master”, who is known for running the triangle offense in Chicago.
President Obama then pantomimed Michael Jordan’s classic layup in which he changed the ball from one hand to the other while in midair, during the 1991 NBA Finals, when the Bulls defeated the Lakers. “You remember that, Magic?” Obama said. Magic Johnson laughed and said, “Yes, sir.”
Later, while downstairs in the Diplomatic Reception Room, Johnson told Lakers beat reporters he wanted to make a quick retort, however thought better involving trading trash-talk with “the most powerful man in the world.” “I got a kick out of that,” Johnson said. “You know, what can you say when the President of the United States can trash-talk you? Normally, I have a pretty good comeback, but this time I had to let him slide. “I had to let him slide, because he was right, Michael did do an incredible move.”
What do you expect? The President is from Chicago. No matter what anyone says, President Obama is such a cool guy – a true Bulls fan to the end.
